A day examining the artistic tastes and art collections of three kings, King Charles I, King Charles II and King Charles III, who have been instrumental in amassing and preserving the Royal Collection, the largest privately-owned art collection in the world.

Without King Charles I’s passion for collecting we would not have the Royal Collection; without King Charles II we would have lost the magnificent collection his father had amassed, and King Charles III is the owner of the Royal Collection today.

Barbara Askew grew up in Eton with a view of Windsor Castle. A  Blue Badge Guide who is the acknowledged expert on Royalty, the Royal Collection and Windsor Castle, she has acted as the liaison between tourist guides and Windsor Castle for over 30 years. She is the only Blue Badge guide to have been invited to three Royal Weddings at Windsor Castle.

A Special Interest Day, arising from popular request from many societies, which explores how and why Paris acted as both a magnet and a cauldron of talent for aspiring artists and designers who shaped the ‘City of Light’ during the first half of the twentieth century. Looking beyond the mainstream, the day will discuss the creative individuals, including newly emerging female talents, who shaped the Parisian concept of 'modernity' in art, design, interiors, fashion, and photography.

Mary Alexander trained as an art historian and graduated with a B.A. Hons in History and History of Art, and an M.A. in History of Art with Distinction from University College London. Her background combines an unusual blend of academic and communications skills and experiences, including lecturing to various arts organisations, working with design professionals on special events and publications, and writing on various aspects of the history of art and design.

Another life-long passion, for contemporary design, led to employment at Pentagram Design in London and New York, working on publications and conferences and international forums on design.

Ravilious has been described as the greatest English watercolourist of the 20th century and his images of the landscape and of everyday objects attract passionate devotees. A prolific painter, printmaker and designer, he became an Official War Artist in 1939, and was killed in 1942 but his legacy is a body of work reflecting deep delight in the world in which he lived. This talk looks at his work and that of some of his contemporaries working on the Home Front in the Second World War.  

Jo Walton has combined teaching and lecturing with a career in art bookselling and has been a volunteer guide at both Tate Britain and Tate Modern. She is now a freelance lecturer for The Arts Society, The National Gallery, The Art Fund, and local art societies.
